How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session
Tips to Make It Smooth, Stress-Free, and Full of Smiles
A family photo session is more than just pictures — it’s about capturing your love, connection, and the beautiful chaos of this season of life. Whether this is your first time or you’ve done this before, a little preparation can go a long way in making your session relaxed and enjoyable for everyone (yes, even Dad!).
OUTFITS: COORDINATE, DON'T MATCH.
Choose a color palette and build everyone’s outfits around it using complementary tones and textures. Think soft neutrals with a pop of color, or earthy tones for outdoor settings. Here are a few tips:
Avoid logos or busy prints — they can distract from your faces and emotions.
Avoid neon colors that can cast colors on faces. Always aim for neutrals when possible.
Layers and textures (denim, knits, linen) photograph beautifully.
Comfort is key — make sure little ones can move freely.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
We usually aim for golden hour — the hour before sunset — for the dreamiest light. Early mornings work well too! But more importantly, pick a time that works with your children’s moods and nap schedules. A well-rested child makes all the difference!
PACK SMART.
A little preparation goes a long way. Consider bringing:
-Snacks (non-messy ones!)
-Water
-Wipes or tissues
-Extra clothes (just in case)
-A favorite toy or comfort item to help little ones feel at ease
-Hair brush
PREP YOUR PEOPLE
Let everyone know what to expect — and keep the mood light. No pressure for “perfect” smiles. This session is about capturing real connection, giggles, cuddles, and personality. I’ll guide you with gentle posing and prompts that help bring out those natural interactions.
LET GO OF PERFECTION.
Kids will be kids — and that’s okay! Some of the best photos happen in the in-between moments. Embrace the silly, the snuggles, the unexpected. If someone needs a break, we’ll take it. If there’s a meltdown, we’ll pivot. It’s all part of the story.
TRUST ME AND HAVE FUN!
I’ll take care of the posing, lighting, and all the little details. Your only job is to relax and love on your people. Laugh, play, connect — and let the magic unfold.
A family photo session should never feel like a chore. It’s a chance to slow down and celebrate this season of life — just as it is. Messy, beautiful, real.
Have questions or want help planning the perfect session? I’m just a message away and so excited to create something special with you!
MORE TIPS FOR SESSIONS WITH CHILDREN:
1. GET THEM EXCITED ABOUT THE SESSION IN ADVANCE.
Kids and adults alike want to know what is coming. An idea could be to plan a surprise, such as a trip to the ice cream shop or a night out at a favorite restaurant.
2. FEED THEM.
Full tummies (or at least not hungry tummies) make for happy kids. If you are planning a family dinner out afterwards, give your children a snack before dressing or pack some (non-messy) snacks for the road. Children are more likely to be restless and easily upset when they are hungry.
3. BRING ALONG THEIR FAVORITE TOY OR COMFORT.
If your child needs a break from pictures to snuggle up, it’s nice to have that comfort on hand. In fact, including that “snuggy” in some pictures speaks to what your family life is truly like at this time and someday you may look back on those pictures warmly remembering when your little one just couldn’t bear to be without that object.
